a sample hypertext analysis by Tonya Howe

This project is geared toward classroom instruction in critical hypertext analysis. I am hoping to use this sample project as a template of sorts to aid my students in their own critical hypertexts. Because many students in the humanities have a limited familiarity with HTML, DHTML, CSS, and other syntaxes and/or languages useful in the web environment, a template of this nature should provide a critical example, a coding framework, and a systematic appearance for future publication.

I envision the "critical hypertext analysis" as the digital performance of a close reading, complete with argument. Having worked in this medium for several years both professionally and otherwise, I became increasingly interested in incorporating the project-assignment into the college literature classroom. How can we self-consciously excavate and capitalize on the connection-making, even argumentative, imperative of the web? I hope this kind of project will encourage students to get their hands dirty with the slippery, associative nature of language; to see argument in a new light; and to stimulate interest about the electronic project within the humanities.
